Find a menu for your favorite restaurant where hispanic food is served. How are the names of traditional plates pronounced in Spanish? This is important for being understood and understanding correctly when you visit the restaurant to order. Remember that when you order, you can use “por favor” after your selection to indicate a request. Here are some examples of foods you might see on a Mexican menu:
horchata: traditional sweet, iced drink containing rice water, cinnamon and sometimes a variety of other ingredients including cream of coconut
jamaica: sweetened, iced hibiscus (jamaica) tea
salsa: usually a chunky “sauce” made of tomato, onion and jalapeño which are also the ingredients for the fresh chopped version called “pico de gallo” (beak of the rooster)
chile: although can be any variety of a spicy nightshade vegetable, usually made into a smooth sauce for which to add to other dishes
tortillas: round and flat, used like bread, made of either corn (maíz) or flour (harina)
queso: cheese
quesadillas: queso melted on tortilla
tacos: usually small corn tortillas with meat inside, to which people like to add onion, cilantro, lime juice, and salsa
nachos: corn chips with cheese and often other ingredients on top
burrito: any variety of ingredients wrapped inside of a flour tortilla
fajitas: a Tex-Mex style of preparing meat and bell peppers sliced into strips like “belts”
enchiladas: tortillas filled with a variety of options, smothered in smooth chile sauce
rellenos: “stuffed” chiles, often covered and fried to soft or crispy in southwest dishes
chocolate: traditional hot chocolate usually including cinnamon
churro: a long donut covered in cinnamon and sugar and sometimes filled with cream
sopapilla: a dough pillow, inflates as it fries, served with cinnamon, sugar and honey
flan: light custard-type dessert with syrup made of slightly burnt sugar
